Greater than the Angels

Greater than the Angels

The New Testament Book of Hebrews begins with a spiritual description of past, present and future.

Hebrews 1:1-2 (NLT)

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.

Long ago, God spoke to mankind in many different ways (angels, prophets, signs, and wonders). When Jesus came in the flesh, a period of time called the final or last days began on the earth. In that day and today, God speaks to mankind through His One and Only Son.

God the Father has given all things over to the Son, and God will only speak through the Son in these final days leading up to the return of Christ. The only Word we need in these final days is Jesus. Jesus is the Word, and the Word is Jesus, and every Word from God in these final days will come from and through Jesus.

Before Christ came, God would communicate to mankind through angels, but not in these last days. The Apostle Paul warned about receiving a Word from angels in the countdown of the last days, which we refer to as the church age.

Galatians 1:8-9 (NLT)

Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you.

9 I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed.

Is it possible that an angel from heaven would come and pervert the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Yes! Satan is a fallen angel, and yes, he comes to preach a different gospel, a gospel that would lead people to their death and destruction.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (NLT)

But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

15 So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.

Satan is the god of this world, and he disguises himself as a messenger of God, one who would communicate to us on behalf of the Father in these final days. But it’s not true. It’s a lie. He is the deceiver and the enemy of God and the work of God on earth to redeem mankind.

With that background, these next verses from the Book of Hebrews begin to take shape in our minds.

Hebrews 1:3-6 (NLT)

The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. 4 This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. 5 For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.” God also said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.” 6 And when he brought his firstborn Son into the world, God said, “Let all of God’s angels worship him.”

The Son-Jesus is far greater than the angel Satan. The name of Jesus is far greater than the name of Satan. All the angelic realm will be required to worship the Son.

Yes, there are angels that follow Jesus, and yes, there are angels that follow Satan. The Bible calls Satan’s angelic followers, “demons”.

Yes, some people follow Jesus, and yes, some people follow Satan. The Bible calls Jesus’ followers “Believers,” and the Bible calls Satan's followers “Unbelievers”.

We are all following someone! We do not live unto ourselves. We are created mortal beings, and we all follow someone. Some will follow a fallen angel and find death. Some will follow the Son of God and find life eternal. But we all follow someone.

Never forget this truth: Jesus is not a created angel. Jesus is far greater than the angels. Read carefully these final two verses of truth from God. The Right Hand of God the Father was not given to angels, but to the Son. Angels are servants, spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hebrews 1:13-14 (NLT)

And God never said to any of the angels, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”

14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.
