I'm Good

I find language to be very interesting. Our words matter. They matter a lot. Different places and cultures use different words to express their thoughts and desires.

There is a statement that is commonly used in our area that I find interesting. For example, a lady will come to the table at a restaurant and ask if I want something more to drink. I respond by saying, “I’m Good”. In Kentucky language, what I am really saying is, “No, Thank You, I have had enough to drink”.

Someone from outside our geographical area might hear me say that to the waitress and wonder why I just told her that I was good when she offered me a drink. Can you see how language/words can be misunderstood or misinterpreted?

The same is true spiritually. Our spiritual language also matters. It matters to God, and it matters a lot. Let me use the same example to make the point.

Each day God offers me a drink of Living Water because He already knows that my soul is dry and thirsty. He knows when I haven’t had enough, even though I might feel satisfied in the moment.

Is it possible that our response to God in that moment sometimes sounds like…I’m Good…no, thank you, I have had enough to drink.

There is one verse inside Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount that speaks volumes to me on this subject, having enough to drink. One verse that has eternal implications.

Matthew 5:6 (NASB)

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

It was maybe a year or so ago that this hit me. It hit me so hard that I began praying a certain prayer every day. I want to share that daily prayer with you today.

O Lord, I pray that I would hunger and thirst for you more than anything in this world or in this life.

I pray that you would satisfy my hunger and thirst by giving me the fullness of your presence.

And after you have satisfied me with your presence.

I pray that you would set my face like flint on following you and only you, and that I would not turn to the right or the left, and never look back.

Take away my fears and doubts and fill me with your Power, Love, and Sound Mind to overcome this world and the ruler of this world.

For only You have overcome this world and the ruler of this world.

It is in this context and this context alone that I can use my words to say to my Lord, I’m Good!
