Satan's Throne
There is much mystery about Satan before and after the Garden of Eden. The Serpent-Satan’s “end of days” demise was announced early in the Book of Genesis in what we believe to be the first “end of days” prophecy in the Bible.
Genesis 3:15 (NLT)
And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
That prophetic Scripture describes the end of Satan (crushed by Jesus Christ), but what about before the garden? And what happened to Satan after the fall of man? We see a scene in the Book of Job (probably around the time of Abraham) when Satan is allowed access to the heavenly court of God. This doesn’t mean that Satan is a part of the heavenly court at that time, but he is allowed access to the heavenly court.
Job 1:6-7 (NLT)
One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them. 7 “Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan. Satan answered the LORD, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.”
Satan is patrolling the earth. What do you think he is looking for on the earth? The Book of Isaiah gives us a wider view of Satan. What was going on in heaven before the garden, before the fall of man?
Isaiah 14:12 (NLT)
“How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world.
The Isaiah 14 Scripture describes the fall of Satan (thrown down from heaven). We would assume that this fall occurred before the time of Adam and the Creation event. What did Satan (aka Lucifer) want in heaven? What does Satan/Lucifer want on earth? Do you know?
Satan/Lucifer wants the throne…He wants a throne to rule and reign from!
Isaiah 14:13-14 (NLT)
For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north. 14 I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.’
Satan was the Bright Star, and he wanted to be set above the other angels/stars and take the place of God himself…to be like the Most High. Why is that a problem…there is no one like the Most High then and there never will be. But Satan/Lucifer wanted the throne.
Satan wanted the throne of God before the foundations of the earth, and he still wants the throne today. He’s been patrolling the earth since the days of Job, looking for thrones of power to sit and reign upon.
I want you to consider three thrones today. The throne of God, the throne of the earth and the throne of man’s heart. Satan has already attempted to ascend to the throne of God and failed. That leaves two other thrones. Satan has achieved his plan to sit on the throne of this present earth. Jesus reveals that Satan is the prince/ruler of this present world. Satan took that throne from Adam through the deception of Eve.
John 12:31 (NLT)
The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.
Now, he wants the throne of individuals, the throne of the human heart. God’s greatest command and greatest desire for mankind is that we would love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Idolatry is when our heart becomes divided between God and the world, which is actually God and Satan.
If Satan can draw our hearts away from God…he gets another throne to reign over and to reign from. But there is another throne coming to Jerusalem. It will come when the seed of woman (Jesus) will finally crush the serpents head and take back sovereign control and authority over the earth that was lost by Adam.
The Book of Daniel (9:27) prophesies a time when Satan will take possession of a man (the beast or Antichrist-King) and sit on the throne of the rebuilt Jerusalem Temple during the Tribulation. This will be Satan’s final attempt to stop Jesus from regaining control of the whole earth.
2 Thessalonians 2:4 (NLT)
He [Antichrist] will exalt himself and defy everything that people call god and every object of worship. He will even sit in the temple of God, claiming that he himself is God.
Satan wants the throne! He wanted the throne of God in heaven, and he was thrown out instead. Satan wanted the throne of this present earth and took it from Adam through the deception of Eve. Now, Satan wants the thrones of individuals on the earth to carry out his deception and authority over this present dark world. Satan’s power will not prevail. Jesus will come and unseat him from the earthly throne at the end of the Tribulation.
2 Thessalonians 2:8 (NLT)
Then the man of lawlessness will be revealed, but the Lord Jesus will kill him with the breath of his mouth and destroy him by the splendor of his coming.
Revelation 20:1-3 (NLT)
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit and a heavy chain in his hand. 2 He seized the dragon—that old serpent, who is the devil, Satan—and bound him in chains for a thousand years. 3 The angel threw him into the bottomless pit, which he then shut and locked so Satan could not deceive the nations anymore until the thousand years were finished. Afterward he must be released for a little while.
Guard your heart? Satan wants to draw your heart away from God and find a place to sit and reign. Our only hope to overcome the power and deception of Satan is for Jesus to reign over our hearts (to be born again by the Spirit of Christ) in the time of waiting.
