Singularity

Singularity

I was recently watching a roundtable discussion between Elon Musk and a couple of high-tech leaders who were connected to Artificial Intelligence (AI). They were all in agreement that we had reached “singularity”. I will give the definition below for those who don’t yet understand the concept of “technological singularity”. This particular definition is from GROK, which is one of the artificial intelligence resources available to the public today.

Technological Singularity (in the context of AI) refers to a hypothetical future point in time when artificial intelligence becomes capable of self-improvement that is recursive and rapid, leading to an intelligence explosion — an intelligence far surpassing the brightest human minds in virtually every field (scientific creativity, general wisdom, social skills, strategic thinking, etc.).After this threshold is crossed, further progress would be driven primarily by the AI systems themselves rather than by humans, making the future trajectory of civilization fundamentally unpredictable from our current vantage point.

This singularity is starting to sound like a horror movie. No, it’s not a movie. It’s real life, and it’s here now. Nations around the world are racing to see who can create the fastest and most powerful AI platform. It is said that the one who wins will rule the world.

Why take the chance? Why risk making machines that can one day take control of humans? Many believe this AI will be able to extend human lifespans or perhaps offer eternal life to humans through transhumanism.

What does it all mean? Does the Bible speak of such a time when knowledge will increase so rapidly that the world will change? Yes! The Prophet Daniel prophesied a future time that could be compared to today’s singularity revolution.

Please notice the context of this Daniel prophecy. The world will be in a time of great anguish, which is probably a direct reference to the Great Tribulation that Jesus talks about in Matthew 24:21. Daniel prophesies a Great Tribulation together with bodily resurrections from the dead…can you see it in Daniel’s end times prophecy, the Rapture and the Tribulation?

Daniel 12:1-4 (NLT)
1  “At that time Michael, the archangel who stands guard over your nation, will arise. Then there will be a time of anguish greater than any since nations first came into existence. But at that time every one of your people whose name is written in the book will be rescued.2  Many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting disgrace.3  Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever.4  But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret; seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush here and there, and knowledge will increase.”

Daniel is told to seal up the future details until the time of the end…when knowledge will increase. Can that be the singularity, when machines become smarter and more powerful than man? No one knows for sure, but I can’t help but wonder if all this is directly connected to the original sin of man. When Satan told Eve that humans could be gods, only to find out that it was all a lie.

Genesis 3:4-5 (NLT)
4  “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.
5  “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

How should the church respond to the singularity? Give your hearts fully to God by trusting in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We should also pray for wisdom and discernment in these uncertain times. Pray fervently that God will reveal the truth to us and keep us from becoming deceived by the powers of this world.

James 1:5-8 (NLT)
5  If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.6  But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.7  Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.8  Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
