Why Did God Become a Man?
Creation, in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth...do you know why? Creation, in the beginning God created Adam, and from Adam He created Eve...do you know why?
Little Johnny was in Junior Church one Sunday, and his teacher explained how God took one of Adam’s ribs out to create Eve, Adam’s wife. Johnny was amazed by the story and couldn’t get it out of his mind. The next day, Johnny was running in PE class when his side started hurting. The PE teacher saw him crying and asked him what was wrong. Johnny said, “I think I’m going to have a wife”.
Creation...it’s all His...Stars in the heavens, the vast oceans and mountains, the atoms and molecules...they are all His, but He wanted something more...He wanted life. Not like animals and plants...He wanted friendship, fellowship. He wanted family...God wanted children.
Even before the creation of the world, before Adam and Eve...God declared a Son.
I know it’s hard for our mind to comprehend, but God separated a part of Himself into another person, calling Him...His Only Begotten Son.
Hebrews 1:5 (NLT)
For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.” God also said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.”
Before He made Adam...before He made anything, we know of in our world...He declared His Only Begotten...then came Genesis. Of all the Genesis creation, only man was made in the image and likeness of God himself...capable of becoming His children.
Psalm 8:3-6 (NIV)
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
God gave his entire creation to Adam, and He only left one thing open and out of bounds...a tree. God gave Adam the freedom to choose, a soul that could reason and decide its own will/purpose. The animals didn’t have it, but Adam and Eve did...the ability to choose to obey or not.
They chose to disobey, and man fell from his place as the friend of God. Love, that’s the only way you can describe what comes next...God reveals His plan to become a man, to pour Himself into human skin and become a second Adam so that He might restore the love and family (children of God) relationship lost by the first Adam’s sin.
Do you remember the Christmas prophecy of Isaiah... She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’). Isaiah 7:14. In the New Testament, it becomes even clearer.
Colossians 1:18-20 (NLT)
Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.
Do you know why? Why did God become a man? He did it to reconcile us to Himself!
1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (NLT)
So you see, just as death came into the world through a man [Adam], now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man [Jesus]. 22 Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life.
New Life...that’s why God became a man...that’s the “why” of Christmas...Do you know why? It’s the “why” that I struggle most with...Why wouldn’t God just say...they’re not worth it? Why would an all-powerful, perfect Creator God wrap himself in human flesh and come to the earth and die for me...the only answer is love.
John 1:14 (NLT)
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
He’s not going to give up on you as long as you don’t give up on Him. When God placed His holy seed in the womb of Mary, He was saying to each of us today...I love you too much to let you go. I’m coming to save you! I will do whatever it takes to get you back as my child!
